COVID-19 Icon System
Overview: In 2020, I trained under Professor Renee Walker in an Environmental Design class to develop a solution for a way-finding problem. At the time, COVID-19 had swept the world and we experienced a pandemic like nothing we’d seen before. NYC had been the largest hotspot of the disease in the United States at the time, and the city relies heavily on the Metro system, which was a real health hazard.
Solution: Designed expansion of MTA Brand Guidelines (M. Vigenlli, 1970) ; a new set of icons and type / pattern treatments to convey social distance messaging and encourage safe practices.
Based off of MTA Brand Guidelines (M. Vigenlli, 1970).
Created an additional section of brand guidelines to accommodate new imagery and messaging.
I chose to make the COVID-19 icons and system purple because it was a color that hadn’t been previously used in the brand, so I knew that it would draw attention to the audience. It also acts as a very clear and readable contrast color to red, which was being used a lot at the time to signify “dont’s”. The icons are all based off of regulations that MTA had posted in the first week of the outbreak.
